A City Rooted in History

Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, is one of Malaysia’s oldest cities, founded in 1735 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin II. As the administrative and royal seat of Kedah, it has played a crucial role in the region’s history, from the early Malay Sultanate to British colonial rule and the struggle for independence. Due to its strategic location, Alor Setar became a significant center for trade, governance, and cultural development. One of the most notable figures born in this city is Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s fourth and seventh Prime Minister, whose childhood home now a museum remains a key attraction

In addition to being a rice-producing hub, Alor Setar has now evolved into a center for commerce, tourism, and education. Despite rapid development, the city continues to maintain its unique historical and cultural identity.
